Resettlement

Providing essential support services in resettling refugees and IDPs is a fundamental priority area of WELDO. Resettlement is multi-layered operation and WELDO helps in addressing the specific needs of refugees allowing them to begin life anew who would otherwise have neither home nor country to call their own.
WELDO’s resettlement focus areas are (a) pre-departure and post-arrival services (b) receptions management (c) health assessment and accommodation assistance; (d) reintegration management and operations (e) capacity building and trainings to help refugees and migrants integrate successfully and safely into their new communities.

WELDO provides assisted return services to labor migrant, asylum seekers and refugees who are unable or unwilling to remain in the host country or country of transit and who have decide to return to their country of origin". WELDO works on a comprehensive approach to migrant returns ensuring that migrants are prepared before their departure and they feel welcome upon their arrival . WELDO’s pre-departure counselling addresses their concerns and presence of WELDO’s staff members at the airport to offer them friendly meet and greet instills sense of security and safety.
WELDO staff provides on-arrival assistance services to both voluntary and enforced returnees which includes facility to call family members, in-country travel arrangements for returnees to their final destination, an overnight stay prior to onward travel and medical assistance to returnees with emergency medical needs. Some migrants return to unfamiliar social, economic, cultural, and physical settings therefore WELDO’s caseworkers maintain close contact with returnees until they are well-settled.

Reintegration

Reintegration assistance ensures that migrants can return to their home countries in a dignified, humane and sustainable manner. WELDO assists migrants who are either detained or want to leave, but who do not have the financial or logistical resources to do so. WELDO in joint collaboration with its European Partner Institutions provides reintegration services to its beneficiaries to help them rebuild their lives once they have returned Pakistan.
WELDO works with each returnee to prepare a tailor-made reintegration plan, taking into account each returnees' situation, needs, and skills. WELDO provides psycho-social reintegration by signposting returnees to various departments for medical or legal assistance, registration documentation, housing and education of children and economic reintegration by enrolling them in training course, offering assistance in starting up a small business and referrals for job placements The overall emphasis is on sustainable returns that offer future perspectives to help individuals and families successfully repatriate and reintegrate into their home countries.

Research and Analytics

WELDO captures substantial data and insights which are instrumental in policy analysis , dialogue facilitation and capacity development while working closely with implementors, policy makers and beneficiaries. These high-quality, policy-relevant knowledge products are useful in analysing migration related multi-sectoral trends, linkages, behavioural factors, social and economic drivers and profiling of research subjects.
WELDO’s research findings rooted in data and evidence helps with ; • improving WEDLO’s program delivery and conducting impact assessment • providing more insights into migration drivers, barriers to the sustainable reintegration, and to inform development of migration policy. • providing expert technical advice to partner institution and various government departments on migration governance • contributing to the knowledge sharing by collating lessons learned and identifying best practices.

Gender Equality

Women and girls represent half of the world’s population but due to gender inequality the potential of this half is not reached to a meaningful extent. Social, environmental, and economic development cannot be achieved without gender equality. Gender equality is also a prerequisite for peaceful societies. The way forward to achieving gender equality is to have gender inclusive developmental practices in all realms of social, environmental, and economic development. WELDO is working towards gender equality in all these fields and is proactively forging partnerships with international partners under gender inclusive projects.

Climate Change

Pakistan faces growing vulnerability to climate change coupled with natural disasters, poor resource management and other transboundary environmental problems has led to severe consequences for local communities, food security and devastating impacts on ecological systems. There is pressing need for improved governance of natural resources, mitigation of the risks of climate change and to increase the awareness of biodiversity loss.
Urgent transformative change is needed to prevent biodiversity collapse, which is driven by lack of respect for planetary boundaries. Strengthening local and indigenous communities’ rights to their ways of life and knowledge systems, and rejecting ‘modern solutions’ are crucial to prevent further biodiversity loss and climate change.
WELDO works towards environmental conflict mitigation, climate resilience and upholding human rights by campaigning at local and international level for policy change, implementing local interventions to protect forests and biodiversity and to strengthen communities’ rights and management of forests for a safe and resilient future.

Climate-Smart Agriculture and Energy Initiatives

Climate change has brought devastating consequences for Pakistan. Recent flash floods have wreaked havoc in Pakistan affecting around 33 million people; nearly 1 million homes have been destroyed or damaged, and more than 1,700 people have died. With more than one-third of the country reportedly submerged, housing, infrastructure, and livelihoods are negatively affected, and agricultural losses appear to be extensive. However, the catastrophic consequences of climate change can be mitigated through proper ecological governance, building climate-resilient infrastructure, capacity building of local population and adopting climate smart practices.
WELDO has always been working for the advocacy of improving food security, alleviating poverty, reducing emissions and building more resilient livelihoods. WELDO is currently working towards increase in the capacity, knowledge and skills of women farmers and low-income producers by generating and disseminating evidence-based knowledge of the impact of climate-smart agricultural practices. WELDO has encouraged use of participatory approaches (combining seasonal climate forecasts, historical weather analysis and crop/soil modelling) to identify affordable, gender responsive and adaptable agriculture practices through its Climate-Smart Agriculture Initiatives. Furthermore, WELDO’s Climate-Smart Energy Initiatives are more focused towards increased access to green energy to sustain economic growth. These research-led initiatives have been designed around a wide range of indicators including nutrition and food security, screening of climate risks, alternate efficient energy resources, gender and social equality and bio-diversity indicators.
